Czech Republic Foods

Foods of the Czech Republic

Back

Credible sources for traditional Czech cuisine don't really seem to exist, the best list I've found is from Wikipedia[1] but here I've listed some of the general trends and notable foods I've seen across multiple sources.

  • Soups are often said to be extremely important to Czech culture, some common ones I found are:
    • Česnečka, garlic soup
    • Zelňačka, a cabbage soup
    • Kulajda, a "South Bohemian soup containing water, cream, spices, mushrooms, egg (often a quail's egg), dill and potatoes."[1]
  • Dumplings, with varying fillings, are quite common as a side dish
  • Pork is the most common of meats used in dishes
Potentially most notably: the Czech Republic is one of the highest consumers of beer per capita[2]. Pilsners, which originated in the city of Plzeň[3], are especially popular and have become popular world wide as well.

Trdelnik, a pastry originating in Hungary which later became known as a Moravian dish, has more recently become extremely popular as a tourist food in Prague. When I was in Prague in 2015, there were tons of street food stands selling them which seemed to be doing quite well.
